“Community Mental Health Awareness”

The college held a significant “Community Mental Health Awareness” event on August 30, 2023, in the college auditorium. The event aimed to raise awareness about mental health and its importance within the community. It featured an esteemed resource person, Miss Lovitoli Awomi, a renowned Counselling Psychologist and the Lapiye Center for Mental Well-being founder.

The function was structured into two informative sessions, each focusing on different aspects of mental health.

Session I: “Mental Health Awareness”

The first session commenced with Miss Lovitoli Awomi shedding light on the fundamental concepts of mental health. She emphasized the significance of recognizing mental health as an integral part of overall well-being. Miss Awomi discussed various aspects such as stress, anxiety, and ways to maintain a healthy mental state. She also highlighted the importance of avoiding negativity, seeking help, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), personality disorders, emotional sensitivity, adolescents’ years, juvenile Delinquency, change and challenges in Adolescents, stigma about Sex, guiding youths in life skills, self-esteem and reducing the stigma associated with mental health challenges. The session successfully engaged the audience and provided them with a deeper understanding of the concept.

Session II: “Prevalence of Mental Health Issues”

In the second session, she delved into the prevalence of mental health issues in today’s society. Drawing from her expertise, she began with a simple activity to exercise the brain, overcoming stress and real-life examples showcasing the prevalence of mental health challenges across different age groups and managing those issues. Miss Awomi stressed the need to work on past negative experiences, unresolved issues, managing emotions, promoting positive mental health, getting therapy and counselling, self-awareness, destigmatization, and the importance of creating a supportive environment for individuals facing mental health issues.

The event witnessed active participation from both students and faculty members seeking advice and insights from Miss Awomi. The audience interacted with her during a Q&A or discussion session, where they posed thought-provoking questions about various aspects of mental health. Her insightful responses and practical suggestions left a lasting impact on the attendees.

The “Community Mental Health Awareness” event succeeded in its objective of raising awareness about mental health within the college community.
